I love stories. I love hearing them as much as I love telling them. Stories are a powerful teaching tool. They help shape our understanding of reality and relationships. They help to shape our identity as individuals, as part of a family, and as part of a culture and a nation.
It’s no wonder that Jesus used stories as a teaching tool during his earthly ministry, and one of his favorite types of storytelling was in the form of parables—short stories in familiar settings that reveal spiritual truths. But do we hear them correctly? Do we miss the intended “shock” within the parables because they have become too familiar to us? Or have they become so well-known to us that we assume we already completely understand them? I’m convinced that the parables should still shock us. When heard properly, they still expose sin and reveal Jesus. They teach us about the way things are in this world and about the way they are in the kingdom of God.
Join us as we sit at the feet of Jesus, the master storyteller. You may be surprised by what He teaches.
